10 Natural Ways to Sleep Better at Night

From morning daylight to a smarter caffeine cutoff, these ten practical habits can help make bedtime easier and support more restful nights.

1. Keep Your Wake-Up Time Steady, Even on Days Off

If your alarm rings at seven on weekdays and ten on weekends, your mornings are following two different schedules. A steadier wake-up time gives your body a more predictable daily rhythm. It is one of the simplest places to start when bedtime feels different every night.

Choose a wake-up time that fits your actual responsibilities, then keep weekends reasonably close to it. NHLBI suggests limiting the difference between weekday and weekend schedules to about an hour. Build in enough opportunity for sleep, too: a consistent alarm cannot compensate for repeatedly staying up until the early morning. Most adults need at least seven hours.

Make the morning easier by preparing clothes or packing a bag the evening before. At night, head to bed when you feel sleepy rather than trying to force sleep at an arbitrary minute. The aim is a repeatable pattern you can live with, not a perfect streak that turns one late evening into a failure.
