17. The Wave: An Ocean Swell Frozen in Sandstone
Location: Arizona, United States

The name becomes obvious as soon as you see it. Red and cream bands sweep across curved sandstone, turning the ground into what looks like a rolling wave. The lines rise along the walls and dip through the middle, pulling your eyes into the scene like an optical illusion.
The Wave is a sandstone formation in the Coyote Buttes area of northern Arizona. Its striking appearance combines the layering of the rock with the sculpted contours exposed by erosion. The stripes follow the surface so closely that the whole formation can seem to be bending or flowing.
There is no single towering object responsible for the effect. It is the way many small lines work together across the larger curves. A person in the frame helps reveal the scale, but can also make the place look even more like an oversized piece of modern art. Without that familiar reference, the photograph might be a landscape or a close-up of something only a few inches wide.
