18 Real Places on Earth That Look Completely Fake

18. The Richat Structure: The Giant Eye Hidden in the Sahara

Location: Mauritania

For the last place, you need to pull the camera back. Way back. Seen from space, the Richat Structure appears as a huge bull’s-eye in the Sahara, with concentric rings that look far too organized to belong in such an immense desert.

Often called the Eye of the Sahara, the formation spans roughly 30 miles. It was once considered a possible impact crater, but geologists understand it as an eroded dome of rock. Different layers have worn away at different rates, leaving the circular ridges that make the pattern visible.

The scale is what makes this one especially strange. On the ground, you cannot take in the entire “eye” the way an astronaut or satellite can. A feature that looks like a neat symbol in a photograph is actually a vast landscape. After places that trick your eyes with color, reflections, and close-up shapes, this one delivers a final reminder: sometimes Earth saves its best patterns for a viewpoint humans rarely get to use.
