Which Place Fooled Your Eyes the Most?

Look back at that reflection in Bolivia. After seeing everything else on the list, it is still difficult to shake the feeling that the sky is in the wrong place.
What makes these landscapes so memorable is that they challenge different expectations. We expect rock to look rough, so Antelope Canyon’s flowing walls surprise us. We expect deserts to look dry, so the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses seem misplaced. We expect enormous natural features to be irregular, so the Richat Structure’s rings look almost intentional.
If you had to choose just one, which would it be?
- For impossible color: Zhangye’s hills, Caño Cristales, or Grand Prismatic Spring.
- For strange shapes: the White Desert, Cappadocia, or the stone forest of Tsingy de Bemaraha.
- For an optical illusion: Salar de Uyuni, Deadvlei, or The Wave.
