18 Real Places on Earth That Look Completely Fake

2. Zhangye’s Colorful Hills: Mountains That Look Painted in Stripes

Location: China

Bands of colored sedimentary rock across the hills of Zhangye National Geopark in China

Someone appears to have dragged a giant paintbrush across these hills. Ribbons of rusty red, ocher, cream, and gray follow the slopes, bend around ridges, and disappear into the distance. From certain viewpoints, the landscape resembles an enormous layer cake that has been tilted and sliced open.

These are the Colorful Hills of Zhangye in China’s Gansu province, often shown online as the Rainbow Mountains. Their stripes come from layers of sedimentary rock with different compositions and colors. Geological movement tilted and folded the layers, while erosion exposed the patterns visible today.

The stripes are real, but their intensity changes with the light and surface conditions. Some heavily edited internet photos push the colors well beyond a typical view. The most interesting detail needs no extra saturation: a single band can continue across an entire hillside, showing that the pattern belongs to the rock itself.
