Niihau, United States
Travelers absolutely love island-hopping in Hawaii, but very few can say that they’ve been to every island.
Niihau is named “The Forbidden Island” – for an extremely obvious reason. The island isn’t visible to anyone, except for when it’s silhouette emerges as the sun sets over Kauai’s Kekaha Beach. One family owns the island and it’s been that way for over 150 years. The family has done everything they can to keep the outside world off of the island.
The only people who are allowed to enjoy the beauty of the island are the people who live there. But the only people who are actually allowed to live on the island are descendants of the family who purchased it in the 1860s.
