Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Norway
This subterranean seed storage facility is located on the remote island of Spitsbergen. It was literally built 400 feet into a mountainside. The facility has control of 840,000 samples of 4,000 different seed species from all around the world. The seed bank is essentially a safety deposit box. Government leave samples of seeds in the facility for safekeeping, just in case a major event wipes out the food supplies.
The only people allowed inside are official “depositers”. The facility is also known as “the final back up.”
