5. Machu Picchu, Peru
The remains of Machu Picchu, discovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, represent one of the most wonderful and enigmatic historical sites on the globe. While the Inca population certainly traveled to the Andean mountain top (7972 ft. elevation), setting up many rock structures from the beginning of 1400’s, their myths show that Machu Picchu (which means ‘Old Peak’ in the Quechua language) was recognized as a holy place from a far ancient time.
