10 Unusual Bridges That Are Attractions All by Themselves

A bridge that curls up, a canal above a river, and a crossing grown from living roots: ten remarkable bridges that make the journey part of the attraction.

10. Ponte Vecchio: A Shopping Street Suspended Over the Arno

Ponte Vecchio with shops projecting above its stone arches across the Arno

On Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, the shops are so much a part of the bridge that the crossing can feel like a small street hovering above the river. Seen from the bank, their projecting rooms crowd over the arches, creating a distinctive outline of walls, windows, and roofs.

The present bridge dates to 1345, after an earlier crossing was destroyed by flooding. Its three broad arches span the Arno, while the buildings above give it a second identity as a place of commerce. Goldsmiths and jewelers are closely associated with the bridge, continuing a long history of workshops occupying its limited space.

There is another layer above those shops: the Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 as part of a protected route for the Medici between their civic and residential worlds. A single crossing therefore contains several overlapping stories. At water level it is a stone bridge, at street level a row of businesses, and above that a reminder of how Florence’s rulers moved through the city.
