10. Zhangjiajie’s Sandstone Pillars: Mountains That Seem to Float in the Clouds
Location: China

Most mountains spread out at the bottom. In the Zhangjiajie area, narrow rock towers seem to shoot straight upward, with vegetation clinging to their tops and ledges. Mist can hide the lower slopes, leaving isolated peaks that appear suspended above the valley.
The wider Wulingyuan scenic area contains more than 3,000 sandstone pillars and peaks, many rising over 200 meters. Weathering and erosion have separated the rock into towers, gullies, and steep walls. Forest fills the gaps, making the contrast between the slender pillars and the surrounding greenery even stronger.
The floating effect comes from what the clouds conceal. With the bases hidden, your eye loses the connection between the summits and the ground. Clear weather reveals an extraordinary stone forest; fog turns it into something closer to a fantasy landscape. Both versions are real, but they can look like entirely different places in photographs taken from the same viewpoint.
