18 Real Places on Earth That Look Completely Fake

9. The White Desert: Giant Chalk Mushrooms in the Sahara

Location: Egypt

Mushroom-shaped white chalk rock formations in Egypt’s White Desert

A white mushroom rises from the desert, balanced on a narrow stalk. Nearby rocks suggest birds, towers, or abstract statues, depending on the angle. The White Desert looks like a sculpture garden whose artist had access to an entire stretch of the Sahara.

These pale formations are made of chalky limestone. Weathering and erosion, including abrasion by windblown sand, have worn away the rock unevenly. Where lower sections erode more quickly, broad tops remain above thinner bases, producing the unlikely mushroom shapes.

The color makes them even stranger. Against warm sand and a blue sky, the white outcrops can resemble snowbanks that somehow survived in the wrong climate. As shadows stretch across the ground, their outlines become easier to read as animals and familiar objects. You do not need to know a formation’s nickname to play the game. Your brain starts supplying its own names almost immediately.
