18 Real Places on Earth That Look Completely Fake

11. Caño Cristales: A River With a Red Carpet Under the Water

Location: Colombia

Colorful aquatic vegetation beneath the clear water of Caño Cristales in Colombia

The water looks as though someone has poured bright red dye through a rocky riverbed. In places, the color collects into thick patches, while clear channels weave between them. Add small cascades, rounded rock pools, and surrounding greenery, and the scene becomes almost implausibly decorative.

The vivid red and pink areas are associated with an aquatic plant commonly known as Macarenia clavigera. It grows attached to submerged rock, and its appearance changes with conditions including sunlight and water levels. The clear water lets you see the living color beneath the surface.

That distinction matters: the river is not permanently flowing with red water. Its famous display is seasonal, and the different tones also involve vegetation, rock, light, and the water itself. The nickname “river of five colors” captures the impression better than a promise that every stretch always contains exactly five. At its most striking, the riverbed looks as though it has been planted as an underwater garden.
