Congress Voted Us Free On July 2, 1776.
John Adams once wrote that July 2 would become the most famous day in American culture. So close, John, so close. While the U.S. Congress voted to break free from Britain on July 2, it did not adopt Thomas Jefferson’s edition of the Declaration of Congress until July 4, 1776. For one reason or another, Americans latched onto July 4th instead of July 2nd. “Happy Second of July!” sounds quite odd.
