Harvard Was The First University In The United States.
Originally called “New College”, it is anything but. Harvard University was founded in 1636 and officially chartered in 1650. The name Harvard came from John Harvard, the school’s first benefactor. Upon his death in 1638, John Harvard left the university his entire scholarly library as well as half of his entire estate. The school was erected a year later and named after him.
