Practicing Proper Oral Health: Ways to Protect a Child’s Teeth

A number of parents think it’s not incredibly important for your child to maintain a good oral health routine because they’re going to lose their teeth anyway. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it’s important that your child has a good oral healthcare routine starting from a very young age. Teeth are not the only thing in your mouth that can be affected by brushing, routine exams, sealants, etc. Your gums are also at risk. It’s also a good idea to get your child in the habit of taking care of their teeth early on. This will prevent dental issues down the line when they are older.

Regular Dental Checkups

A routine dental exam should occur about once every 6 months. During this appointment, your child’s teeth should be cleaned, checked, an x-ray should be performed to look for underlying issues and there are some additional services you can choose to have done. Dentists are very good at spotting problems long before you or your child would be able to. They can also spot disease sooner than your child’s pediatrician can.

Proper Brushing and Flossing

It’s important that your child learn how to properly brush and floss their teeth. When they are young, a parent can help out. As they get older, the responsibility should largely become theirs. Your dentist can help your child learn the proper way of brushing and flossing. They can also give some feedback as to whether or not they think the job has been getting done properly. Brushing and flossing can prevent cavities, and brushing can also prevent gum disease.

Sealants

There are some products and services you can choose to use for your child during their routine appointment. Sealants can be applied to the tooth, as a way to form a protective barrier over your teeth. This can help prevent decay, discoloration, cavities and much more. Sealants are recommended for children between 7-13 years old and are applied as permanent molars come in. This is usually a very affordable procedure that will last for many years at a time.

It’s important that you find a dentist in your area that you like. Your child needs to like this person as well. Make sure you pick an office that is going to provide you with the flexibility that you need for making an appointment. Finance options may also be something that you need. It’s ideal that your child gets started with a dentist and then remains there. It’s good for a dentist to see your child as they grow and have new teeth coming in.
