Will Medicare Be Enough for the Projected 79 Million That Will Be on It in 2030?

As baby boomers reach the age of 65, programs including Medicare and Social Security are coming under a great deal of pressure. Access to consistent medical care at the reduced rate offered by Medicare may be hard to get as some physicians can’t work for the lower payout offered by the program. In addition, Medicare and Medicaid are often used for stay-at-home nursing care.

Current Coverage

In the 20-year stretch between 2010 and 2030, the number of Medicare users is expected to rise by more than an additional 30 million people. On top of that, those currently enrolled in Medicare will need more expensive care and treatment. The simple truth of the approaching Medicare crisis is that a large sector of our society will be needing it, and the care they need will cost more.

Current Limit

Attitudes are changing about nursing home care and long-term care options. This is actually adding greatly to the quality of life of many seniors. However, for some seniors to stay at home safely, overnight care will be needed. For any senior citizen with serious health risks, this need for overnight attention means they will need 24-hour care. A big weakness in Medicare is that it doesn’t provide for 24-hour in-home care. Consequently, some seniors who have the cognitive capacity to stay home may need to seek long-term care and housing.

Protect Yourself

If you’re serious about aging in place with occasional help from a skilled caregiver you can pay through Medicare, plan early. Review your home for tripping hazards. Move laundry facilities near the bathroom or bedroom to reduce the risk of a back injury or fall. Modify your bathroom with grab bars for the shower and a non-slip tub base. Do what it takes to prevent an accident so you can age in place safely. For those who do need assistance, track your Medicare expenses carefully. Medicare is a hugely complex program with a high risk for both error and fraud. If you have help that stops by, review their hours and expenses before submitting the bill. Track your appointments with doctors and study the tests they order. Make sure the charges on your behalf are fair and accurate.

Medicare and Social Security were designed as safety nets to assist the most vulnerable. Unfortunately, many senior citizens now rely on them entirely and struggle to meet living and medical expenses. Be a good steward of your Medicare dollars by monitoring your bills.
