U.N. Buffer Zone, Cyprus
In 1974, Cyprus was invaded by Turkey, causing a civil war between the residents of Greece and Turkey. A “Buffer Zone” was taken control of by the U.N. in the capital, Nicosia, when the fighting ended due to a ceasefire.
This area is essentially a no-man’s land that is surrounded by walls that keep the Turkish community from the Greeks. Inside of the walls are deserted businesses, homes, and a small airport that The Atlantic describes as “frozen in time” for decades.
