5. BioShock’s Big Daddy: A Walking Deep-Sea Nightmare

BioShock’s Big Daddy takes the familiar outline of an old-fashioned diving suit and turns it into something deeply unsettling. The result is perfect for an elaborate Halloween costume: bulky, strange, and recognizable before anyone even explains the game. This example shows Kyle Mathis as Subject Delta during the 2014 C2E2 costume competition.
The character offers a costume maker a rich visual problem. It should feel like equipment designed for a hostile underwater world, while still reading as a figure that can move through a room. That balance between person and apparatus is what gives a Big Daddy its distinctive presence. The costume becomes an environment around the wearer.
It also has a built-in advantage over a conventional masked monster: even its basic shape is unusual. You do not need to recognize every reference to enjoy the spectacle. It looks like something that belongs on the other side of a thick observation window, not next to the snack table.
