4. Henderson Waves: A Wooden Wave Above Singapore

Henderson Waves looks as if a long ribbon has been draped around a footpath and frozen in midair. The wood-panelled pedestrian bridge is part of Singapore’s Southern Ridges, linking green spaces with a crossing that feels like an attraction in its own right. Its curves are immediately recognizable, even without the skyline around them.
The bridge runs for 274 meters, and its seven undulating ribs do more than make an interesting silhouette. They create sheltered alcoves where walkers can pause. That turns the structure into a sequence of small resting places, rather than one long stretch to hurry across on the way to somewhere else.
Unlike many of the bridges in this collection, Henderson Waves crosses a road rather than a river. The setting is part of its charm: a practical connection in a busy city becomes a place to linger among the greenery. The warm-looking panels and repeated curves give a large piece of infrastructure the feeling of an outdoor room.
