10 Unusual Bridges That Are Attractions All by Themselves

A bridge that curls up, a canal above a river, and a crossing grown from living roots: ten remarkable bridges that make the journey part of the attraction.

5. Magdeburg Water Bridge: A Canal Crossing a River

Water-filled canal bridge crossing the River Elbe near Magdeburg

At Magdeburg in Germany, the traffic on top of the bridge can float. The crossing carries the Mittelland Canal over the River Elbe, making it possible for boats to pass above another waterway. A photograph can take a moment to decipher because both the route and the obstacle beneath it are made of water.

The canal bridge is 918 meters long and forms part of a larger waterway junction connecting the Mittelland and Elbe-Havel canals. Opened in 2003, it puts the channel inside a huge elevated trough. From the right angle, the arrangement resembles a road interchange redesigned for vessels instead of cars.

What makes it compelling is not a decorative flourish but a change in expectations. We usually imagine a bridge keeping travelers out of the water. Here, the bridge carries their water along with them. The river continues underneath, while the canal follows its own controlled route overhead, producing a crossing that looks strangely logical once you understand it.
