10 Unusual Bridges That Are Attractions All by Themselves

A bridge that curls up, a canal above a river, and a crossing grown from living roots: ten remarkable bridges that make the journey part of the attraction.

6. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct: A Narrowboat Route in the Sky

Narrowboat crossing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct beside its elevated towpath

A narrowboat is normally associated with gentle progress along a sheltered canal. At Pontcysyllte in northeastern Wales, that same kind of boat can glide across a high aqueduct with the valley spread out below. The channel remains narrow and calm while the surrounding landscape suddenly drops away.

The aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal across the valley of the River Dee. Its elevated waterway is supported by metal arches and tall masonry piers, an ambitious combination associated with engineer Thomas Telford. UNESCO recognizes the aqueduct and canal as an outstanding achievement of the Industrial Revolution, when new materials helped make difficult routes possible.

The most striking photographs show the contrast between the modest scale of the boat and the height of the crossing. It is still a canal, complete with a towpath, yet its position makes it feel like something else entirely. Looking at the water alone suggests a quiet afternoon afloat; looking beyond the edge reveals why this particular stretch became a landmark.
