12 Common Foods That Grow in Ways You Might Not Expect

8. Sesame Seeds: A Burger-Bun Topping Packed Into Pods

You could recognize sesame seeds scattered across a bun and still walk past the plant without connecting the two. Sesame grows upright, produces tubular flowers, and then develops grooved capsules along its stems. The seeds are tucked inside those pods.

The scale is part of the surprise. Each seed looks insignificant on a bagel, yet a single pod can hold a large number of them. Before harvest, the plant looks like a crop of little green containers rather than a source of the loose seeds sold in a spice jar.

In many varieties, mature capsules split open and release their contents, a habit known as shattering. That creates an obvious problem for farmers trying to collect the crop, so shatter-resistant varieties are useful. Seen on the plant, sesame stops being a decorative sprinkle and becomes a surprisingly clever seed-delivery system.
