2. Groot: Become a Walking Tree

Groot makes a wonderfully strange Halloween choice because the entire idea is both imposing and friendly. A walking tree can tower over the atmosphere of a party without needing the menace of a monster. This example, photographed at FanimeCon in 2015, shows why the Guardians of the Galaxy character is such a rewarding subject for an elaborate costume.
The challenge is making a human body feel organic rather than simply brown. Groot’s design calls for the visual language of bark, roots, and branches, with irregular shapes that suggest something grown instead of manufactured. The face matters just as much: recognizability comes from keeping a personality inside all that tree.
It is also a strong change of pace in a lineup full of armor and villains. The concept invites people to look closely, then step back and appreciate the whole figure. And if someone asks who you are, the character has already supplied a very short answer.
