There are few bands that have come out of tragedy as well as Def Leppard. While early albums like On Through the Night and High ’N’ Dry were successful, the band reached their highest commercial fame after the band’s drummer, Rick Allen, lost his left arm in a tragic car accident. For most, the loss of one of the most important limbs would hinder their will to drum. Not so for Allen.
Rather than give up in the face of tragedy, Allen continued to drum for the band, supplementing the loss of his left arm with other limbs (primarily his left foot) and electronic drum pads. Songs like “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Women” were recorded after Allen lost his arm. However you spin it, you can’t think “rock” without Def Leppard.
